Like everything in travel, you lose out when you are late, so the operative words are be early. Buy your tickets early so that you can select your seat when the best ones are still available. Being a member of the frequent flyer program is the most reliable tactic and goes a long way to getting you a good seat, especially if you really are a “frequent flyer”.
However, beware of AirTran and Spirit Airlines who have added fees to selecting your seat in advance. Otherwise be sure to check-in online as soon as possible before your flight and select a seat.
If you don’t see a seat you like, call the airlines and speak with a live agent. Sometimes there is a disparity between what’s displayed on the website and what’s actually available (surprise, surprise). Be specific with the agent about the location you want. Instead of asking for a “good seat”, try asking for a specific row or seat number. You’ll be more likely to get what you want…or an acceptable substitute.
Now days, some airlines are charging an extra fee for better seats. JetBlue’s Even More Legroom seats are located in exit rows and have 38” of seat pitch (instead of 34-36”). United offers Economy Plus access to high-ranking frequent flyers – or to anyone paying $425/year for the privilege. If Economy Plus seats are still available at flight time, they can be purchased on a one-time basis. Continental has also recently begun charging for seats with extra legroom.
Check-in online 24 hours prior to departure and confirm your seat again, then get to the airport early. If you arrive too late at your gate, you may lose the seat you worked so hard to get!
When in doubt – ask! Once at your gate, ask whether any new seats have opened up. If other passengers upgrade to business class or don’t show up, you may be lucky and grab a better location. If you have a medical condition, let the agent know and most will do their best to accommodate you. Approaching agents in a spirit of understand. They hear complaints and demands all day, so treat them kindly and they may surprise you!
